Pugs originated in China and in the lower parts of Tibet. They were bred for the purpose to sit on the laps of the Chinese sovereigns during the Shang dynasty in 400 BC. However, there are documents of Pug like dogs seen in 551 BC by Confucius. They are thought to be responsible for the the modern Pekingese and King Charles spaniel breeds. Because they originated in the high altitude, it is assumed this is why they lack long noses.

When you feed your pug you need to remember that they need food high in animal fats. Their native foods would of included rodent, goat, deer, boar, horse or yak. Their grains included barley, rye, and mountain corn. For your everyday Pug we suggest horse and beef meat. Then for their grains give them barley, wheat and rice.

We would suggest you avoid any foods containing lamb, poultry, ocean fish, avocado, or yellow corn.

Last week we had a request asking us if we have any recommendations for feeding a Border Terrier. You requested and we’ll deliver.

The Border Terrier once called the Coquetdale Terrier, developed around the Cheviot Hill in the northern border of England. These dogs were desired by farmers because they could go to the ground while going after a fox, rabbit or rodent and they can keep up with the speed of a horse during a chase. Native food supplies would have been fox, rabbits, and rodents, with wheat and ground vegetation.

When feeding your border terrier we would recommend horse meat, wheat, yellow corn and most of your carbohydrates coming from potatoes.

You should avoid soy, poultry, white fish, rice and beets.

This week’s dog breed I wanted to focus on is the Pointer.

The Ponter originated in Spain before the 1600’s and was later refined to the pointed we know of today in Great Britain. It adapted to some of the native food supplies but it still does better with Spaniard foods then English. Ex. Brown Rice over Potatoes.

The best foods to feed your Pointer would be brown rice, avocado, poultry and fish. You should avoid soy, beet pulp, beef and horse meat or their by products.
