Bach Flower Essences for Animals

Flower essences are a wonderful way to help restore emotional balance to our animal friends. The Bach flower essences are the original system of flower essences developed by Dr. Edward Bach in the early 1900's. Other systems of flower essences have been developed since then.

Flower essences are safe to use, alone or in conjunction with other forms of treatment. They are totally natural, non-toxic and do not produce side effects associated with the use of drugs and other pharmaceutical products. They are also safer than herbs or essential oils since they contain just the energetic essence of the flowers rather than the physical substance of them. In that way they are similar to homeopathic remedies. However, homeopathic remedies are typically used for physical problems whereas flower essences help restore emotional balance.

Do they work? Although few clinical trials have been performed using Bach flowers, their use is widespread by holistic veterinarians, animal behavior therapists and animal shelters. There is evidence to suggest they are effective at dealing with behavioral and emotional imbalances in animals.

Rescue Remedy: This is the "first aid" essence for a crisis situation, physical or emotional. It is actually a blend of 5 different Bach flower essences. Shelters commonly use this to calm animals that are very upset. It is also useful for situations of severe illness or injury. It may also be useful in less critical situations, such as calming animals during a trip to the vet.

Cherry Plum: May help animals that loose control, become wild or crazed or destructive. For high strung animals, including horses that loose control easily.

Clematis: May increase attention span and ability to focus on training lessons

Impatiens: May help nervous animals or animals who seem over anxious

Mimulus: May help with fear of known things (such as thunderstorms or strange people)

Rock Rose: May help any form of terror and/or panic

Star of Bethlehem: May help animals with trauma, either past or present. Used for comfort to animals who are left alone or are kenneled and feeling unloved. Also useful for shelter and "rescue" animals.

These are just some of the 38 essences available. Feel free to experiment with them. Since they are totally non-toxic, you can't hurt your animal by choosing the "wrong" one. It just won't do anything.

Try adding a Bach flower essence to your pet's Acupressure Session. We carry products by Azmira, which come pre-mixed and are easy for you to use. Visit our products section to see these and other flower essences.

Please note that flower essence should never be considered as a substitute for veterinary care. Lethargy, hyperactivity, litter box training and hair conditions may have a physical basis, this should always be checked out first. Even if a physical condition is present, flower essences can hasten the healing process.
